Springtime Lovelies

It's official! Spring is here! (Okay, in Queensland its kinda felt like Spring for a while due to an unusually hot winter, but now it's officially Spring, so there's, erm, a bit of a difference). Sunny days, blooming flowers, buzzing bees and cute baby ducklings abound in the prettiest of all seasons.

In celebration of all this sunshine and cuteness I've put together a selection of a few of my favourite things for Spring (and no, they don't include raindrops on roses or whiskers on kittens).

1. Spring means lots of colour, and these hand woven vases by Crayon Chick have just the perfect amount of neon pop. The natural jute ensures they will fit in perfectly with your existing decor while adding a much needed dose of Springtime colour. $38.

2. *Shameless shop plug* These pretty little love bird hook magnets by OMM Design will add some Springtime cuteness to your fridge or magnetic pinboard. Use them to hang necklaces, lanyards and other random bits of pretty-ness on. Plus they're designed in Sweden and they always make cool stuff don't they? $11.

3. This Down to the Woods Dress from Maiocchi's new Spring collection is my pick for frolicking through wildflowers in. (And don't you just love the word frolic? It conjures up the happiest feelings ever). The Scandi-inspired print and natural hues make this one a winner that you'll want to wear year-round. And did I mention they go up to a size 18 in all their clothes and they're all made locally? Winning! $289.

4. If you're in need of some quirky and original home wares look no further than Stampel's range of handmade wooden vessels, wall hangings and accessories! With spray painted vases inspired by 80's surfboard designs, pretty polka dotted vessels, necklaces adorned with geometric designs and macrame plant hangers, Stampel brings a cool modern edge to retro aesthetics. $45-$120.

5. This Polka Dots and Moonbeams silk scarf by Emily Green (and isn't that the best name for a scarf ever?) is the epitome of Spring with its pastel apricot base and multicoloured gelato spots. Perfect for those days when Winter's chill still hasn't quite left the air. $129.

6. Melbourne screen printer extraordinaires Harvest Textiles create some of the yummiest prints around and this Melting Ice Cream Wrist Bag is the case-in-point. Each bag is different due to the made-by-hand screen printing process, which I think makes them even more special. And nothing quite evokes a Springtime feeling more than the thought of strolling around town whilst toting your new wrist bag and eating an ice cream cone, does it? $60.

7. This Woodland Flower Wreath by Whichgoose is just the thing to wear with your favourite flowy Springtime dress for that aforementioned flower-field-frolicking. This would also make the prettiest hair accessory for the Spring bride, no? $70.

What do you love about Spring? Are there any clothes or accessories you're looking forward to wearing (or buying!) now that the Winter months are behind us?

Loving Right Now: K-Pop Cuteness

Ever since Psy's Gangnam Style went viral, everyone now knows about K-Pop, and K-Pop artists are gaining popularity overseas like never before. Still don't know what K-Pop actually means? Well it's shorthand for Korean Pop (there's also J-Pop, for Japanese Pop) and it is a massive phenomenon in South Korea and throughout the East Asia region. K-Pop and J-Pop bands have millions of die-hard fans and put those try hards (*cough* One Direction!) to shame.

So, what makes a K-Pop or J-Pop band? They must have a) exceptionally fabulous hair that defies the laws of gravity b) cute, non-threatening baby faces that make fans go "awww..." and c) possess either a "cutesy quirky" or "punk lite" dress code. Basically, they have everything a person wants in a pop group. (And who doesn't want someone with fabulous hair, great clothes and dreamy eyes serenading them? Sigh...)

But apart from the pop-tastic fun of their music what I really love about these bands is their style. They have the edge on any Western group where it comes to the level of creativity in their music videos and photo shoots. The amount of daring and fun they seem to have with their clothes and hairstyles is just plain awesome, and puts that impostor Justin Bieber to shame. Really kiddo, you call that good hair?! Pfft. And would you ever see One Direction in pastel coloured suits, angel wings or big band uniforms? I don't think so!

I've put together a little montage of my favourite groups- they all create some seriously catchy music, have the coolest videos and rock some seriously awesome fashion ensembles!

And what would a K-Pop feature be without some actual music? Here are my fave video picks:

Perfume: Spring of Life. Japanese girl group Perfume make the cutest videos with the best dancing! Check out their official You Tube channel for more of their gorgeous videos. Magic of Love has some particularly awesome 70's styling going on!

Big Bang: Fantastic Baby. These boys have been rocking some seriously sweet outfits, hairstyles and accessories since their debut in 2006. If you're looking for the edgiest and most creative hair styles to emulate then watch their videos! (And really, how can you not love a boy band called Big Bang?)

2NE1: I Am The Best. These gals aren't afraid to edge it up and are known for their bold hairstyles and outfits as much as their catchy hooks.

Super Junior: Sexy, Free and Single. It's not hard to see why this this nine-member boy group is so popular! They're all hot, but in a "you can take him home to see mum" kind of way, have fantastically quiffed hair and own some serious dance moves. Swoon.

If any of these songs have got you hooked, they can be found on iTunes along with all the other fantastic K-Pop and J-Pop artists that I didn't have room to mention in this post! And if you want to see more and keep up-to-date with the latest music releases then tune into SBS's PopAsia TV show and radio show. It's on SBS2 at 6pm every Saturday and every Sunday at 4pm. It's chock-full of Asian-pop awesomeness and is not to be missed!

Are you in love with any K-Pop or J-Pop artists? Which group do you think has the best style? I'd love to know!

Makeup Monday: Fresh Hair Inspiration!

Hair colour: it has to be the easiest (and most fun) way to change your entire look. If you're too squeamish for a body piercing and the thought of a tattoo makes you wanna pass out, changing your hair is the best way to give yourself a touch of crazy without going overboard. After all, if you hate it you can just wash it out and start over. Plus hair colour is the commitment phobic gal's best friend. If you can't stand having the same look for more than a few weeks you can simply change your colour to match your latest whim. What could be sweeter than that?

What I really love is finding new inspiration for future hair cuts and colours, and you never know what random photo/celeb/fictional tv character you might come across that will influence your next look. All you have to do is add them all up to find your new style. I like to think of it as the Hair Colour Equation Game (which has to be the most awesome mathematical equation ever invented, if I do say so myself). For my latest minty green hue a few things combined to create the colour:

My Little Pony's rainbow hued manes + Katy Perry's electric blue bob + some Anime inspo in the form of Sakura's candy pink hair from Naruto + Bedtime Bear's fuzzy blue coat (and really, who doesn't secretly want to look like a Care Bear) + the minty freshness of a Peppermint Crisp chocolate bar = a new turquoise hair colour!

To create your own hair equation all you have to do is add up the things you're crushing on at the moment and find a common theme, cut, colour or style. Inspiration can come from anywhere- your current celeb girl crush, a cute cartoon character, random fashionable peeps you pass on the street and even the colours of tasty treats like macaroons or cupcakes. (See, sugary things are good for you... or your next hair style at least).

In need of some new hair inspiration for yourself? Well I've done the research for you! Just pick and choose your fave looks and you've got your very own Hair Equation!

What Hair Equation would you create from these looks? Are you seriously crushing on Jessica Chastain's flowing red mane? Or are you in love with Demi Lovato's blue dip-dyed ends? Or maybe you wish you could sport Khaleesi's icy blonde-ness instead? (Dragons not included with that look, sorry!)

Have a beautiful week!

And the Winner Is...

The prize pack for the giveaway.
If you're a regular reader of the fabulous Oh So Lovely Vintage blog written by Stefanie Hiebert and Erin Thiessen then you might have noticed that we were the featured sponsors last month. Sarah and I decided to hold a special giveaway for the occasion and we are pleased to announce that the winner is...Chloe Moon! Yay!

Chloe inspecting her latest batch of cupcakes.

Chloe has a gorgeous blog called Ergo, where she writes about her adventures through everyday life, relationships and healthy living. There are also some seriously amazing cupcakes and macarons on show because Chloe is a cupcake decorating teacher in her spare time. (Warning: viewing said photos may induce serious cupcake decoration envy). Her boyfriend Craig is obviously a very lucky guy because he no doubt gets to be the official taster for all of Chloe's baking experiments. It's a hard life for some...
Some of Chloe's lovely cupcake creations.
Chloe is also a writer who hopes to have her work published one day. But you can get in first and read her latest untitled story here. Then in the future you can tell everyone that you knew her before she was famous!

How adorable are these teddy bear luau cupcakes?
Christmas tree cupcakes!
You can check out Chloe's other creations and read the rest of her lovely blog here.

We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who took the time to enter the competition and for following our little blog!

Have a beautiful week!

Well the thrifting gods were on my side yesterday. I found my first ever Polaroid camera!! It has been on my list of things I would love to find for such a long time. It's up there with Typewriters, Japanese ceramics and lovely old sewing boxes.

I also found a great little wooden wall cabinet which I think after a coat of paint is going to come up a treat and a cute figurine vase. I also could not resist the calendar tea towels and cute little milk jug with I think I will use as a mini vase. All up it was not bad for under $20.

I hope your thrifting adventures this weekend are as fruitful as mine have been this week.

I'd love to hear what is at the top of your thrifting wish list at the moment!

Cheers Sarah

Recently on Instagram

Instagram has been my addiction for a while now but since becoming a mum it has been such a great app to look at during feeding time. I love the way that you can record things that may happen in your day and helps you to appreciate the little things in life. It is also a great tool for connecting with like minded crafters and have an insight to happenings all over the world.

Have you fallen under the Instagram spell? I would love to know :) You can follow me via @sarahrochford or you can follow Lauren via @whimsyandjuno

Cheers Sarah xoxo

P.S. I only just learnt today that there is an app for blogger that means you can blog via your phone. I know this is probably old news but gee it is so much easier to do seeing as though I don't spend nearly so much time on the computer anymore. Hopefully this will mean I can jump on here a bit more often :)

New in the shop...

With my new little bub I have limited time and energy to be creative so I thought I might play with something small for the shop.

My love of gift wrapping is well known amongst my family. I love picking out the perfect gift for someone and then coming up with new and imaginative ways to wrap it. So I created some neon gift wrapping sets that I hope you'll like.

They are now up on the Whimsy and Juno online shop for $14.95.

Taking the Leap

Making positive changes in life is hard. Really hard. Even though you know these changes are for the better and will make you healthier and happier in the long run, in the short term they can just feel plain impossible. So what can we do when we want to make a change for the better? Especially when we're filled with doubt that we actually can do it and think that maybe it's all just too far in the distance for us to get there? I think it kind of comes down to what the nifty little picture above says: just make the jump. Instead of thinking about how far we have to go maybe we should just get started and stop dwelling on the negatives that bring us down.

In an effort to put this thought into practice I have started (trying) to eat better and have joined Michelle Bridges 12 Week Body Transformation in an effort to give myself a much needed kick up the butt when it comes to exercise. Eeek! The program is currently in pre-season so if you're interested there's still plenty of time to check it out.

So as I continue my little exploration into healthy living and exercising I'll be posting updates and recipes along the way- because accountability is one hell of a motivator! (And I hereby solemnly swear that I will never use the word "journey" in any of these blog posts. If I do, you have my wholehearted permission to shoot me).

In my pursuit of healthier treats that I could use to replace my usual sugar-laden ones with (hello red velvet cupcakes, donuts and tim tams) I stumbled across this fabulous cookbook called The Joy of Gluten-Free, Sugar-Free Baking by Peter Reinhart and Denene Wallace. Apart from having the best name ever for a cookbook it's chock full of delicious recipes. We're talking the kinds of foods that are usually a no-go zone for the health conscious here: bread, waffles, muffins, scones, biscuits, cakes and even pretzels! The recipes use only nut meals so they are super low-carb and stevia is used instead of the usual tonne of sugar.

These Cinnamon-Apple Muffins have a great hazelnutty flavour so you could even spread a little Coconut Chocolate Butter on them for healthy Nutella-ish substitute! Yummm. These muffins turn out super moist and have a texture just like a regular muffin, but better!

Cinnamon-Apple Muffins
by Peter Reinhart and Denene Wallace

Makes around 9-10 muffins.

3/4 cup hazelnut flour
3/4 cup almond flour
1/2 cup Splenda or Stevia (I used Natvia and it worked out great)
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
2 eggs
6 tablespoons milk (or soy milk or almond milk, whatever you like)
2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce (You can find jars of this in the condiments section of the supermarket)
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp liquid stevia
1/2 cup coarsely chopped apple (about one apple)
1/4 cup chopped almonds, pecans, hazelnuts or walnuts for garnish

Preheat oven to 350F (177C).

1. Line a muffin pan with paper or foil liners, then mist them with spray oil (or omit the liners and mist the pan generously with the spray).

2. In a medium bowl, combine the hazelnut flour, almond flour, Splenda or stevia, baking powder and cinnamon and whisk until mixed together.

3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs, milk applesauce, vanilla and liquid stevia together until thoroughly blended. Add the flour mixture and stir with a large spoon for 1 to 2 minutes to make a smooth, sticky batter. Fold in the apples.

4. Spoon or scoop the batter into the prepared muffin cups. The muffin cups should be just about full. Sprinkle the chopped nuts over the muffins.

5. Bake for 20 minutes, then rotate and bake for about another 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and springy when pressed in the centre. (But all ovens are different so I recommend checking on these well before they are supposed to be done).

6. Let the muffins cool in the pan for at least 5 minutes before turning them out onto a wire rack.

7. Inhale the muffins- just try and remember to chew occasionally.

Are you trying to un-glue yourself from the couch and be more active too? What kinds of things are you doing in order to be healthier? Do you have any favourite healthy recipes that you love to cook or bake? I'd love to know!

Have a beautiful week!

Makeup Monday: Beauty that Beats the Heat

I was inspired to write this post because my craft room has turned into a most unwanted sauna (which is really just a nice way of saying "sweatbox") and it got me thinking about how summer is truly the most difficult time of year to wear makeup. Especially when you live somewhere insanely humid and your regular products end up melting down your face faster than a Mr. Whippy soft serve that's eaten at the beach. It's at this time of the year when we need a few secret makeup weapons up our sleeves (or swimsuits?) that beat the heat and make us feel vaguely attractive while we sweat like the proverbial piggies.

Humidity friendly products to look out for are anything that's water-resistant, a gel, a tint, a stain or a lightweight liquid formulation. Basically you want something with serious staying power. And you definitely want to keep things simple- no seductive smokey eyes or packed-on foundation- we're talking fresh and pretty here. Stick to moisturiser, concealer, mascara and lip gloss as your base summer look and you'll be all set. For something a bit more dressy simply add a cheek stain and a swipe of cream eyeshadow and you're good to go. Also, the bonus with hot weather makeup is that applying it takes a helluva lot less time than your usual routine, so there's less fussing and more chilling out under a palm tree.

Aesop Oil Free Hydrating Facial Serum ($63) is perfect for the summer months when you feel like your regular cream moisturiser is just that bit too heavy. This serum sinks right into your skin so you can apply makeup straight away without feeling like your skin is overloaded with products. Plus it's full of antioxidants, botanical extracts, vitamins B and C and has an aloe vera base so it's chock full of skin-loving goodness. Apply it and feel virtuous!

Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray (from $14) is a handy little product that you spray over your face to set makeup and help stop humidity-induced facial meltdown. It's also fab all-year-round for those of us with oily skin who find their makeup sliding off no matter what the weather. What will those clever Scandi's think of next?

Maybelline EyeStudio Colour Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow ($10, and could they make the bloody name any longer?) is just what the makeup artist ordered for hot climates. Cream shadows that dry to a powder have super-staying-powers that their regular eyeshadow counterparts just don't possess. They are also super easy to apply (hello, fingers!) and last all day and into the night. Plus these ones from Maybelline are an absolute bargain so you can afford to buy a few in one go. Try Bad to the Bronze for  a neutral and Tenacious Teal or Edgy Emerald for some shimmery, summery goodness. So, who's for some beach volleyball? (I'm just kidding, as if I'd ever actually exert myself willingly in the heat. Pfft.)

Fairydrops Scandal Queen Mascara (US $24). Okay, okay I know I keep raving on about this mascara but it truly is my favourite and even better than the fact that its fancy wavy brush and microfibres make your lashes super long and lovely is the fact that it magically stays on through everything -even makeup remover- and only comes off when you rub it off your lashes in warm water. It literally stays on through everything, which I tested last year when I wore it in the surf at Waikiki beach. Me, panda eyed? Not this scandal queen!

Benefit Posiepal ($39) is a super handy -and purse friendly- duo containing Benefit's famous lip and cheek stain in Posie while the other end contains California Kissin', a shimmery blue-tinted lipgloss that magically makes your pearly whites appear, well, whiter. Posie is a particularly pretty peachy-pink hue that suits most skin tones and is perfect for the warmer months. A stain is just the thing to use on lips and cheeks in hot weather as it sinks right into the skin and is virtually budge proof. But be warned: it literally is a stain so you must be super quick when using it as a blush and make sure you blend, blend, blend! If you don't, you could end up rocking a hybrid nightmare-inducing-clown/ Raggedy-Ann style cheek look. Stains are also something to avoid if you have cracked or dry lips as the stain will immediately sink into, and highlight, any imperfections in your lips.

Summer is the perfect time for showing off those pretty toes of yours, so why not paint them in a delicious colour like Priti NYC's bright fuchsia Bovey Belle Carnation or the gorgeous teal green of Blue Wedgwood? For the spun sugar hue inclined try Red Maple and Lungwort for candy coloured nail goodness! Only $16.95 each from the Whimsy & Juno online shop. Did I mention that they are completely non-toxic? Yup, they are!

Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains are a humidity-opressed girl's best friend. They are part-stain, part-lip balm hybrids that give you super staying power with extra glossiness to boot. There is a great range of shades available but my picks are Lovesick, a gorgeous bright fuchsia which is a must-wear in any tropical location; Cherish, a sweet lolly hue for the pink obsessed and Honey, a yummy neutral for those who want a more pared back look. At just $17.95 each these are a true bargain! Buy many. You know you want to...

What are your favourite beauty products to use when the summer heat sets in?

Stay cool, peeps!
